Nessie and Other Great Creatures in Michigan

All during winter we watched our herd of deer come out in the morning for breakfast, go back into our woods after sun-up and then return again to graze at dusk. It was really something - and I'm not all that into animals. OK, I'm not into animals except to decide who's for dinner. And speaking of dinner...this guy is Candidate #1 for Thanksgiving 2009. He and about seven of his friends run wild on and around our property. We're thinking we'll get a license and have him dressed for supper.

I'm no wildlife photographer, but this one below is the big, proud turkey out there with the deer herd. There's one deer directly to his right and a few back on the tree line to his left. (How pathetic when you have to explain your photos.) (I should say I took these from our back deck.)

Now these next two are from yesterday. About three weeks ago we had a mallard visit our pond. We were so excited. I was especially excited. I really want ducks in our pond (and no, I don't know anything about having ducks in your pond, so maybe it's a bad thing, but they are fun to watch). Anyway! A mallard came to check things out and the next day he came back with his wife. We so hoped they'd move in to the neighborhood. You know how excited you get when someone looks at the house for sale next door? Will they be good neighbors? Will their kids play with yours? I was just like that. But they left and never came back. But yesterday, this guy came to visit! I have no idea what he is. I thought egret, but I just checked and that's not him. I took a couple of photos and ended up with the best Loc Ness Monster photo! Check this out.

Scott figures he was out there going after the last of our bass. He just took a little dip and quenched his thirst. It must have been a thirsty day because later at lunch we had 2 deer come out of the woods in broad daylight. One of them was definitely the lookout, but not a very good one because once again we walked out on the deck and watched the deer. Scott says they're just warming up to us so that when they eat our garden I won't get mad. (Trust me, I'll get mad.)
